What to do when your motivation hits rock bottom

It could be burnout, fatigue, stress, or you just hit a creative wall. You're not inspired, you don't feel like working, and all you want to do is curl up in a ball and watch Netflix.

When your motivation hits rock bottom, it's important to take a step back and reassess your goals.

Are you working towards something that you're passionate about?

Do you need a break?

Is there something else you can be doing to make the work more enjoyable?

In this post, I'm discussing a few ways to get over the motivational slump and get back on track.

What does motivation even mean?

There are a lot of different interpretations of motivation, but for the purposes of this post, I'm going to define it as follows:

Motivation is the desire to do something. It's what drives you to take action and achieve your goals.

Now, this doesn't mean that you're going to be enthusiastic about every task on your to-do list. But it does mean that you have the desire or urge to get started and see it through to the end.

When you don't have motivation, it can feel like you're stuck in neutral.

Why has my motivation gone away?

Before we get into how to regain your motivation, let's first take a look at why it happened in the first place!

Get to the bottom of the problem

When you lack motivation, there is an underlying cause, and you just probably haven't identified it yet. So, the first step is to take a step back and analyze your situation.

Are you burnt out?

This is a common problem, especially if you've been working on the same project for a long time or if you're constantly under stress. If you're burnt out, it means that you need a break.

What can you do to take a break without completely stopping your work?

Can you take a day off?

Can you work on something else for a while and come back to the project later?

Can you delegate some of the work to someone else?

Identifying that you're burnt out is the first step in getting your motivation back.

Do you need a change?

Sometimes, we get bored because we're doing the same thing over and over again. If that's the case, then you might just need a change.

Can you change your routine?

Can you work on something else for a while?

Can you take on a new challenge?

Making a change can help to rekindle your motivation.

Do you need more information?

If you're stuck on a project, it might be because you don't have all the information you need. In that case, doing some research or reaching out to someone who can help you is a good way to get unstuck.

Making sure that you have all the information you need is a key part of getting your motivation back.

Answering these questions can help you get to the root of the problem and find a way to get your motivation back.

What to do to get motivated again

Once you know what the problem is, it's time to take action!

1. Take a break

If you're feeling burnt out, it's important to take a break. This doesn't mean that you have to stop working altogether, but it does mean taking some time for yourself.

You can take a day off, take a vacation, or just take some time to relax. It's important to give yourself a break so that you can come back feeling refreshed and ready to work.

2. Change your routine

If you're bored with your current routine, it might be time to change things up. Try working on something else for a while or changing your routine.

If you're looking for a new challenge, why not try taking on a new project? This can help to rekindle your motivation and give you something new to focus on.
