Karl Lagerfeld - Remembering a Creative Icon

Updated: Jun 30, 2019

"I am like a caricature of myself, and I like that. It is like a mask. And for me the Carnival of Venice lasts all year long." - Karl Lagerfeld

He is known for his sometimes outrageous comments, his bold attitude and also his timeless tweed suits. His creativity, courage and talent made him one of the most famous and successful designers of the 20th and 21st century. He expanded fashion into a state of mind and created more than pieces of clothing. He was well known for saying "Elegance is an attitude" and he lived by that. In 1983, Karl Lagerfeld took over Chanel and helped shape the brand into the powerhouse that it is today. Lagerfeld became more than a designer, he turned himself into an icon and an inspiration. His signature look was iconic: black sunglasses, suit and a pony tail. In his later years, he became associated with his pet cat Choupette, who almost became as famous as the designer himself.

Largerfeld's brand was a multi million dollar industry, with worldwide reach. As creative director of Chanel and Fendi, he was actively involved in designing some of the most iconic runway looks ever. He then created his own brand, Karl Lagerfeld, and collaborated with high-street brands such as H&M, which made designer inspired fashion accessible to everyone. His clothing is interesting, fun, classy and very much Parisian. Lagerfeld's influence on the fashion industry was immense. He was always changing, always evolving and never boring. May he rest in peace.

If you are interested in coffee table books, Chanel has released a book featuring all of his collections. His iconic silhouette t-shirts are still popular and representative of the brand.
